Material specifications describe the stone category

ASTM C568 covers limestone dimension stone and groups it by density into low, medium and high classifications, each with its own property requirements. ASTM C503 covers marble dimension stone and ASTM C1527 covers travertine dimension stone.

When a specification names one of these standards, it is telling you which category of stone the project expects and which requirements the material should meet.

Test methods describe how a property is measured

Separate standards describe how individual properties are measured. ASTM C97 covers absorption and bulk specific gravity, ASTM C170 covers compressive strength, ASTM C99 covers modulus of rupture and ASTM C880 covers flexural strength.

A test method does not set a pass mark by itself. The pass mark comes from the material specification or from the project requirements.

A selection guide supports the conversation

ASTM C1528/C1528M is a guide to selecting dimension stone for exterior, interior and flooring uses. It helps the project team ask the right questions, but it is not a substitute for a project-specific specification.

Use it to structure the discussion about exposure, finish, thickness and the evidence the project needs.

Ask for project-specific reports

A standard does not certify a particular lot of stone. If the specification calls for test results, ask the supplier which reports are available for the selected stone and request them early in the quotation process.

The design professional decides whether the results are suitable for the application. Keep the reports with the sample approval record so they stay linked to the material that was chosen.
