Facade Stone Cladding / Project sourcing guidance
01 / Define the use
A single project can contain several exposure conditions. Identify which components are exterior panels, interior wall surfaces, paving or carved details. Record the project location and use for each part of the stone schedule.
02 / Approve the material range
Request representative physical samples for the proposed variety and finish. Agree the acceptable appearance range rather than approving one ideal piece. Identify any vein direction, filling or surface treatment that matters to the design.
03 / Make geometry explicit
Give dimensions, thicknesses, edge treatments and profile sections. Confirm the controlling units and the fabrication tolerances to be agreed. For custom elements, show the interfaces and how larger profiles are divided into pieces.
04 / Separate material review from assembly design
Stone test information concerns the material being tested. The structural design of panels, support and attachments must also be reviewed. Do not assume that a material report approves a complete facade assembly.
05 / Identify reference documents
ASTM C568/C568M covers limestone dimension stone. ASTM C1242 guides the selection, design and installation of dimension stone attachment systems. Use these as reference points in discussion; the project professional must determine applicable requirements, editions and testing.
06 / Close the supply scope
Before ordering, document the approved stone and finish, piece schedule, quantity, packing, delivery terms and the parties responsible for drawings, testing, engineering and installation. Ask the quotation to separate included services from items handled by others.
Common questions
Is this guide a project specification?
It is a starting checklist for a supply discussion. The project architect and engineer must determine the material, assembly design and applicable project requirements.
Does a supplier photograph confirm performance?
No. Images help communicate appearance. Review the specific material documentation and project design requirements before approving a material for an application.
